What is the process of a rhinoplasty or ‘nose job’ surgery with a rhinoplasty specialist?

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a "nose job," is a surgical procedure aimed at reshaping or resizing the nose for either cosmetic reasons or to improve function or a combination of both. It's one of the most sought-after cosmetic procedures globally, including in the UK. This blog post delves into the intricacies of rhinoplasty surgery, covering its types, the procedure itself, recovery, risks, and frequently asked questions.

Woman considering a nose job

As a rhinoplasty surgeon, I find deep satisfaction in the intricate blend of art and science that each procedure demands, allowing me to tailor my approach to the unique anatomy and aesthetic goals of each patient. The transformative impact of rhinoplasty, not only on a person's appearance but also on their self-confidence and quality of life, provides a profound sense of accomplishment and purpose in my work. I am constantly challenged and invigorated by the technical complexities and nuances of rhinoplasty surgery, pushing me to continuously refine my skills and knowledge in this specialised field.

What can a rhinoplasty help with?

Rhinoplasty can address a range of concerns, from altering the size and shape of the nose to improving breathing difficulties. The surgery is highly individualised, aiming to achieve a result that harmonises with the patient's facial features and meets their aesthetic and functional goals.

What are the different types of nose jobs you can have?

Cosmetic Rhinoplasty: Focuses on changing the nose's appearance to enhance facial harmony.

Functional Septorhinoplasty: Aims to correct breathing issues caused by structural abnormalities such as a deviated septum.

Combination of functional and aesthetic Septorhinoplasty: This aims to correct breathing issues caused by structural abnormalities and change the nose's appearance to enhance facial harmony.

Revision Rhinoplasty: Performed to correct or improve the results of a previous nose surgery.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty: Tailored to preserve the ethnic identity of the patient, considering the unique characteristics of different ethnic noses.

What is the rhinoplasty surgery process?

The Procedure

Rhinoplasty can be performed using two main techniques: the closed approach, where incisions are hidden inside the nostrils, and the open approach, which involves an incision across the columella (the narrow strip of tissue between the nostrils). The choice of technique depends on the specific changes needed. My main approach is the open Rhinoplasty approach.

Pre-Surgery

The pre-op process with at least 3 consultations is crucial. It involves discussing your goals, evaluating your nasal structure, and using imaging software to simulate potential outcomes. It's also a time to discuss any concerns and understand the realistic outcomes.

Besides that it's the time to develop the needed trust and understanding between patient and surgeon. It's of utmost importance in my practice to not rush this process and take as much time as needed.

During Surgery

Rhinoplasty usually takes 2.5 to 3.5 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon restructures the bone and cartilage to achieve the desired appearance or function. Once the modifications are complete, the skin is redraped over the new framework, and the incisions are closed.

A cast is placed onto the nose for the next 8 days.

Surgery is performed at one of the following locations: Weymouth Street Hospital, Cromwell Hospital, Cadogan Clinic and the Lister Hospital

Post-Surgery

Immediate aftercare involves resting with your head elevated to reduce swelling. Normally splints and packings are not needed and significant bruising are very rarely seen.

You will start with a specialized lymphatic drainage therapy directly after surgery and with a personalized skin care protocol.

Recovery

Recovery varies by individual but typically involves a few stages. The first week is when you may experience the most discomfort and visible swelling, which significantly improves within two weeks. Most people return to work or school after the cast is off, although complete healing and final results can take up to 18 months to fully manifest.

Post-operative appointments

I will see my patients 8 days post-surgery for the cast removal and then another 3 times in the first 18 months. However, I am always happy to see patients if they have problems or questions. My brilliant PA is also always available to answer questions.

Risks and Complications

Like any surgical procedure, rhinoplasty carries risks, including infection, bleeding, and reactions to anaesthesia. Specific risks related to rhinoplasty include dissatisfaction with the aesthetic outcome, disenchantment, not meeting the pre-op set goals, breathing difficulties, and the need for revision surgery. Choosing a qualified and experienced surgeon can significantly minimize these risks.

FAQs

Q: Am I a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

A: Ideal candidates are in good general health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcome. A thorough consultation with a rhinoplasty surgeon can determine your suitability. I will also perform a psychological assessment to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery.

Q: How long do the results last?

A: Rhinoplasty results are generally permanent, although the aging process can affect the appearance of your nose over time.

Q: Is rhinoplasty painful?

A: Pain is typically minimal and manageable with medication prescribed by your surgeon. Most discomfort subsides within the first week.

The takeaways

Rhinoplasty is a complex and highly personalised procedure that can significantly impact a person's appearance and quality of life. Choosing a reputable and experienced surgeon in the UK is essential for achieving the best outcomes. By understanding the process, setting realistic expectations, and carefully following post-operative care instructions, patients can enjoy satisfying and long-lasting results.

Remember, the journey to a new nose involves not just surgery but a comprehensive process of consultation, recovery, and adaptation to changes. With the right preparation and care, rhinoplasty can be a rewarding experience that enhances both your appearance and confidence.
